Sports Media Compensation

Compensation in the sports media industry, especially early in one's career, can be a challenging aspect to navigate. Steve acknowledges that many in the industry face similar struggles to his when it comes to salary, and it’s something that can be a deterrent for people entering the field.

“That's a question and answer that more people need. This answer isn’t for me personally. Luckily, I’ve gotten to a comfortable salary, which I would never tell anyone what it is,” he shared. “The NESN job was around the 45k range. The Bleacher Report job was around 50k and eventually grew to six figures. A lot of the jobs are going to be in that 50-60k a year range, and that’s why it’s a turn-off to a lot of people. And if you’re living in a city, it’s so hard to balance when you just feel like the checks are going to the apartment and food every month.”

For Steve, his early years in New York were a struggle financially. “That part of it definitely sucks. I was barely surviving in Manhattan, working on that salary, and trying to have any social life. Going back to Boston because, you’ve got to remember, at that point, the Sox were really good. Like the sweet spot leading into the best team in franchise history in 2018.”

It always comes back to the Sox.
