Both Steve and I believe that what sets him apart in the sports media world is his ability to be comfortable in any situation, no matter how unfamiliar or high-pressure it may seem. His career has been full of moments that pushed him out of his comfort zone, but now, he thrives in those situations.
“I would say the main thing that makes me unique is I’m kind of comfortable in any situation,” Steve explained. “I’ve now put myself in enough uncomfortable situations throughout my career that I’m not really uncomfortable anymore.”
One key example Steve points to is his experience at Bleacher Report, where he did "Ask Me Anything" sessions with athletes. "If I’m working, I’m just kind of heads down. It’s hard to do lots of things at once. But I think sometimes at BR, on those conference calls, I wouldn’t say a ton because it was a lot of higher-ups. But I would do these interviews with big-name athletes, and each week they would change the person transcribing. Their reaction was always the same: ‘Do you know this person? Are you buddies or something? There’s no way he would be that comfortable on a call and you just met.’"
For Steve, his ease in connecting with athletes is something he’s developed over time. “It takes time to get to that point,” he said. “But I would say that’s the biggest thing that differentiates me from other people. I can typically get the most out of athletes and make it feel as authentic and genuine as possible.”
